Day 2

Day 2 prompt - RWP in http://www.acronymattic.com/rwp.html = Road to Wigan Pier, by George Orwell.

2/4/10, 11.40am

What makes me a Socialist?
It's not the theory, the forest
of books,
Marx's Manifesto nor The Road to Wigan Pier.
It's not the revolutions,
the strikes, the action and reaction.
It's not the fear
of a world in ruin and the widening class divide.

It's the view.
It's the queue for Job Centre Plus
the young men hanging around in town
'Cause they've nothing better to do.
It's the girls with faux-designer shoes
which she thought were more important than paying her rent,
sat in the B&B, smoking.
It's inflation and taxes and 'it could be you'
'Cause you're nothing these days without money.
It's the bankers bonus and billionaires
and people who moan about immigrants.
It's Gordon Gecko saying 'Greed is good',
and realising he's out of date
'Cause greed is standard these days.

  1. Nice poem :)

You're right, socialism needs no justification except the observation of an unfulfilling capitalist life—which isn't hard to see.

The lottery is sick. A voluntary tax on the stupid.

I don't think people can understand life anymore without thinking money... Hah, anymore... I say that, but I'm an 80's child, I've only experienced life through the shopping centres of post-Thatcher yuppy Britain. But why does it all feel so weird to me?

    Gordon Gecko, hah!
